I ordered a test print of the Chickenfox Derby game, just in time to take it to Geek Girl Con! It arrived the other day and I am really pleased to share it with you now:
Up until now, the Chickenfox game has been a bunch of hand-drawn cards tucked into card sleeves with old bicycle playing cards as support behind them.
Now, the game is one step closer to being real!
I wanted to have a playable set to take to conventions and playtesting nights, and have a reproducible set to reduce the risk of losing any of the original cards. I had to rush to get it printed in time, so this prototype has the original art, enhanced with fresh layout linework and text using a font made from my handwriting. The game also fits in a much smaller box when printed, which is very helpful!
There are a lot of things to tweak; a lot of text, rules, designs, and artwork to finalize, but it’s so satisfying to see the game progressing past a dream and into reality.
October 8-9 – GeekGirlCon in Seattle!
GGC is one of my favorite conventions I’ve been to, so I’ve been preparing to attend with my Ambassador Plushie Chickenfox and a printed demo of the Chickenfox Derby game! I don’t have a table (maybe next year?) but I’ve been told I’m allowed to take the demo to the basement gaming room for play testing.
If you’re going to the Convention and want to find me, I will be attempting to tweet my locations on twitter at @ChickenfoxSTU. If you see me PLEASE don’t be afraid to say hi!!! Meet/hug the Chickenfox, get a picture (the kind where later I draw your cosplay), and get a sticker, I have loads of them just for you!
Also check out my pals at Valorous Games at booth 624!
You can see the final product of my layout work in their Valor RPG system book, and learn more about the next book, Villains Creatures and Foes, which is my next project for them!
If you’re interested in joining the Chickenfox Patreon, you have until the end of Friday (September 30) to become a Patron and get in on the October Patron rewards (including traditional art commission tiers – you’ll get a physical piece of art in October if you get in by the end of the day)
I updated all the art tiers to include immediate (no payment delay) digital request doodles, as well as a $4 tier that is just digital art, for those on a budget. Let’s see how it goes!
The Future Projects Poll has been really helpful! Thank you to everyone who has submitted a response! I’m still taking responses, if you haven’t had a chance to do it yet. It’s really short and helps me a lot :)
There’s definitely some stuff you all want that I didn’t foresee being so popular, and I’m really excited to do them!
I was reminded about how slow (and bad) I am at sewing and took Plushies off the list… but there are still the write-ins asking for them! So I’m starting to learn how to make it happen. Look out for a future poll about plushies. IT WILL HAPPEN. Just… it might take a while.
In February, I started working on the Chickenfox Game! I’ve been wanting to make a game for a while, and after a weekend with friends in a snowy cabin, the concept started pulling together.
It’s currently in an playable alpha (not yet beta) while I expose it to playtesting and refine the rulebook and wording on the cards.
Here’s the current introduction:
Chickenfox racing clubs from around the island are gathered to compete against each other in the ultimate Chickenfox Derby race.
Chickenfox Derby racing is an intense running sport with high stakes and big rewards. The racers are running as fast as they can, and you are their pace-keeper. Your job is to tell them when to turn so that they can stay on the road as much as possible. But Chickenfoxes aren’t afraid to play dirty. They steal points, force each other off the road, and sabotage whenever they can get away with it.
Each running club has three racers and a shared pool of backup racers that can tag in to help maximize their scores. The club that covers the most ground at the end of the meetup wins!
I’ve created a little poll to see what you guys are interested in! It should take about… 30 seconds I guess. It’s 2 questions and a fill-in-what-you-want. It’s anonymous and does not require you to log in to anything. Thanks!
(if the poll doesn’t load, it’s located here)
Well, I did the thing! Chickenfox Studios is now on Patreon!
Patreon is a website that helps fans support creators with monthly donations. In return, I’ll provide extra content and early access to my patrons.
My goal is to create more Chickenfoxes, more consistently.
Come find us at booth 306 if you’re going! Play the game, check out the book, get a sticker, and meet some neat folks ( @kyleehenke and @kingcharon will be there with us… ! And the lovely Carrie from Juniper will be at table 601! I’m stoked.)
Come let me take pictures of you with the Chickenfox, which I will later post on this very website!
(I’ll be trying again to use my Twitter to make it easier to find me, if you’re so inclined)
I wish I could say it’s the anniversary of constant updates, but that is unfortunately not the case.
Chickenfox Studios has embarked on its first foray into print design with Valorous Games’ Valor tabletop RPG… and the PDF launch is Friday, April 3rd at Seattle’s SakuraCon! It’s what has been consuming my time lately, but I’m very very happy with how it’s turning out and am looking forward to the hardcover print that will be released soon.
That said, I am aiming to make this truly the year that the Chickenfox takes off, with more updates and projects! I know I say that a lot, but life has a way of throwing curveballs.
If you are going to SakuraCon, follow the ChickenfoxStudios twitter to hunt me down and get a sticker! I’ll be mostly in the Gaming room helping to run Valor demos, but I’ll be around all three days. First convention! Whee!
This week has been a bit crazy: here’s a whirlwind Chickenfox!
Wrapping up the semester, so no new Chickenfoxes this week while I focus on final projects, etc.
There’s one computer hooked up to our scanner and my husband really really needs it right now…
Yay! Stickers are now in the Chickenfox Store!
Just use the paypal scrolldown to choose a pack of 3 or 6. Shipping is included, so get them while they’re available!
Even if I run out, I’ll have more made, so you’ll get yours eventually :)
Have been consumed by schoolwork. Will return on Saturday.
Stay tuned for the 2012 Chickenfox Olympics!
Going to have a lot of things on my plate soon, so to improve update quality and sanity levels, Chickenfox Studios will be updating four times a week on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
Thank you everyone for coming along on this strange ride with me! Stay tuned for lots of exciting new things coming soon!
